ABSTRACT
Claireece Jones, a sixteen-year old girl living in 1987 Harlem and going by her middle name, "Precious", struggles with illiteracy and morbid obesity in her blighted urban community. Pregnant with her second child thanks to continual rape at the hands of her otherwise absent father, Precious must cope with life under the roof of her emotionally abusive, welfare abusing mother, ultimately receiving a potential ray of light in her tortured existence when her move to an alternative school places her under the mentorship of sympathetic teacher Miss Blu Rain.
