ABSTRACT Tom Jericho, prodigious mathematician-cum-codebreaker assisting the British government with efforts to crack the Nazi-operated Enigma machine, drops out of his line of work after suffering a breakdown brought about by stresses associated with his job and relationship with co-worker Claire Romilly. Tom returns some time later to news that the Germans have developed a new Enigma impervious to their techniques, forcing him to shift gears to help develop new code-breaking methods; what's more, he must discern Claire's whereabouts, as she has gone missing and is suspected of spying for the Germans.
