The Young Lions (2-Apr-1958)
Director: Edward Dmytryk Writer: Edward Anhalt From novel: The Young Lions by Irwin Shaw Keywords: Drama, WWII The lives of three very different men change dramatically as soldiers in WWII: Marlon Brando is Christian Diestl, ski instructor slowly turned inhuman by the Nazi war machine; Montgomery Clift is Noah Ackerman, a shy Jewish private in the American army who finds courage; and Dean Martin is Michael Whiteacre, actor with a desk job who decides to fight. Also Maximilian Schell's first role in an American film, serving as Brando's ruthless captain. Though not nearly as anti-war as Erwin Shaw's novel, that message still comes through. Received 3 Oscar nominations including Best Cinematography and Best Dramatic Score.
