REVIEWS Review by James Manuel (posted on 15-Nov-2009) Here is a light, fun film that is typical of early 1950s musicals from MGM. Esther Williams, Joan Evans and Vivian Blaine have all joined the WAVES for silly reasons but this is a fantasy, of course. We don't look for serious questions and answers in musicals. That's why they are so much fun. Esther gets to do some swimming, the girls do some singing as do the five De Marco sisters. The songs are nothing special but fit the film. "The Navy Waltz" performed by a female chorus, a male chorus, the De Marco Sisters and then everyone is goose-bumpy. Debbie Reynolds and Bobby Van do a guest spot number that reminds one of "Aba Daba Honeymoon" but not as good. My only fault with this was the casting of Joan Evans. She never did much for me. I will say that she was fine with Williams and Blaine in the "What Good is a Gal Without a Guy" number.
I am retired and am not into "problem" films or action films or sex stuff. I want to relax and have a smile and chuckle or two
with the films in my collection. Such films I can watch over and over again with the same delight. I am an Esther fan. My favorite of her films is "This Time for Keeps".
