REVIEWS Review by anonymous (posted on 8-May-2006) Here is a 4 star movie in the
finest sense of the phrase. Nick Nolte & Mac Davis pair up in a
very real to life depiction of what its like to be on a pro football
team (in the 70s that is) You can't help liking Phil Elliot & his
buddy Seth as they beat the system until the very end of the movie,
where the climax & Noltes superior talents as an actor are truly
revealed. Davis is a major surprise as a country singer turned
Hollywood actor & gives a very fine performance in this
comedy/drama. Excellent casting & look for Charles Durning playing,
yet again another sinister role as the assistant coach. G.D.Spradlin
& Dabney Coleman also give fine performances as Head Coach &
the brother of the teams owner. This movie makes you want more of the
same. No sequels & it's too bad there were none, because these guys
do a great job making you feel like you're right in the locker room with
them.
Review by Don Nell (posted on 27-Apr-2007) I was just telling somebody recently about it and went to refresh my memory on some details when this website came up in the search results. I said this was probably one of the best sports movies ever made and would be well worth seeing for anyone with even the most casual interest in football, because the story transcends the activities of a fictional pro team and was based on a book by a former player. Thoughtful and thoroughly entertaining with an especially good musical score that is kind of jazzy.
