Wells Fargo (30-Dec-1937)
Director: Frank Lloyd Writers: Paul Schofield; Gerald Geraghty; Frederick Jackson; Stuart N. Lake Original Music by: Victor Young Producer: Frank Lloyd Keywords: Western Spanning the 1840s to the 1870s, an entirely fictional Ramsey MacKay rises from express messenger to become a vice president of Wells Fargo. Joel McCrea's first major western; some conflict occurs from his being married to a woman with Confederate sympathies, played by McCrae's real-life wife, Frances Dee. Wells Fargo continued a trend of glorified corporate histories made into film. Received an Oscar nomination for Best Sound.
After Alistair Cooke wrote in his critical review of Wells Fargo, "This is the longest teaser in the history of motion picture -- a ninety minute trailer to a film that was never made", Paramount threatened to sue for $1M, though no lawsuit was ever filed.
