REVIEWS Review by anonymous (posted on 5-Jan-2007) An outstanding look at a champion of social justice and peaceful non-violence. This movie has appeal for Catholics and non-Catholics alike. Romero follows the last years of Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador. During the late seventies, a corrupt and violent military dictatorship oppressed the poor of the nation frequently resorting to torture and murder. Meanwhile, a violent rebellion took root and in the middle, the poor of El Salvador struggled without an advocate. Romero became that advocate and appealed to both sides to reconcile. His protests and his declaration that no soldier is obliged to obey an immoral order proved to be too much for the government and in 1980, Archbishop Romero was assassiated while celebrating mass. This movie is a passionate retelling and Raul Julia gives a wonderful performance in the title role.
