The Master (1-Sep-2012)
Director: Paul Thomas Anderson Writer: Paul Thomas Anderson Keywords: Drama A nymphomaniac World War II veteran finds a perceived way out of his disaffected post-war existence by getting caught up in an upstart cult.
ABSTRACT Inspired in part by the mythos surrounding Scientology, The Master is a film about how Freddie Quell, a man returning home to American from service in World War II who discovers the process of adjusting himself back into his old life to be far harder than he'd expected, finds camaraderie and solace in Lancaster Dodd, the head of a new religious movement known as "The Cause", after stowing away on a yacht belonging to one of Dodd's followers whilst intoxicated one night. Embarking on a distressing journey of increasingly blind loyalty, Freddie's loved ones play witness to a man's emotional disintegration dressed up as an earnest and expansive belief in a new philosophical dogma. Nominated for Academy Awards for Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress.
