REVIEWS Review by Todd W. Schaffner (posted on 6-Nov-2007) The Garden of the Finzi Continis is a haunting film of which
I had heard much, but had never seen until I bought the DVD last month - Oct 2007. The color of the film is dream-like as is
the plot which moves toward a tragic climax that only our
hindsight can see. These "Beautiful People" are doomed as much
by their own unawareness as by the threat that ultimately
destroys them.
An American film on the same subject would have hit the
subject too hard with a sledge hammer-such as The Holocaust and Schindler's List-and overdo it. The Garden takes its
time and,in part, obscures and delays the inevitable climax.
The film's "tone" can lead us to believe-if we had n't known it-
that these people really are protected from their doom.
The Garden of the Finzi Continis is a beautiful and frightening film worth seeing often.
