The Last Starfighter (13-Jul-1984)
Director: Nick Castle Writer: Jonathan Betuel Keywords: Sci-Fi, Video Game Trailer park handyman Alex Rogan, anticipating college but denied a student loan, passes time playing the arcade video game Starfighter; after a particularly high score, he is recruited by alien agents to help guard the Star League against invading Xur. Tongue-in-cheek, with good characters though dated special effects; now a cult film. Received a Hugo nomination for Best Dramatic Presentation.

REVIEWS Review by anonymous (posted on 15-Jan-2007) Seeing this film as a child, I recently relived the moments recreated on DVD. The hero, Alex Rogan (Lance Guest), feels destined to live out his boring life in a trailer park, when he unwittingly makes the highest score on the "Starfighter" video game. While thinking of his future plans, he is met by Centauri (Robert Preston) in an unusual car who whisks him off to outer space to help "defend the frontier from the evil emperor Zur and the Kodan Armada." While on the planet Rylos, Alex feels he's been tricked and wants to return to earth, not knowing that Kodan fighters have already been sent to earth to kill him. After learning of the situation, Alex calls on Centauri to bring him back to Rylos to join the Starfighters. However, upon his return, Alex finds that the starfighters have all been killed in an attack on the base. Against all odds, Alex joins with his navigator, Grig (Dan O'Herlihy) to become The Last Starfighter. Claiming to have the highest quality special effects and digital imaging of the day, The Last Starfighter is very entertaining, though predictable and lacking quality acting in many areas. Defintely not an award winner but absolutely a cult classic and worth the watch.
