ABSTRACT Successful music composer Peter Bretter's five-year relationship with similarly successful television actress Sarah Marshall comes to an unexpected end one night when the starlet breaks up with him in their shared apartment. Possessed by a latent sense of grief and self-loathing refusing to go away despite a series of one-night stands, the dejected Peter heads to a Hawaiian resort for a tropical getaway, only to find his problems multiplying tenfold when he learns of Sarah's plans to visit at the same time with her new rock-star beau in tow. Now our hapless music man must find a way to make the most of his vacation as an awkward social circle comprising himself, Sarah, her boyfriend, and sympathetic hotel concierge Rachel begins to take shape.
