REVIEWS Review by Norman Wall (posted on 17-Nov-2007) The Gainsborough films during the 30s and 40s were the most entertaining British films made. It's true critics and many of the stars that appeared in them didn't rate them highly. However, James Mason, Stewart Granger, Michael Rennie etc., owed their later Hollywood careers to them. The careers of Phyllis Calvert, Jean Kent, Patricia Roc and Margaret Lockwood took a downward turn once they left Gainsborough Studios. Their Hollywood efforts didn't make any ripples. Will Hay didn't repeat his successes when he went over to Ealing Studios. It was very sad to many picturegoers when the Gainsborough Lady made her final bow when the Ostrer brothers sold out entirely to Rank in 1946 The Wicked Lady and others may have been a lot of ham but the aim of any film should be to entertain, not educate. I still get a thrill today whenever the Gainsborough lady ghost appears on my television screen to introduce a film.
