ABSTRACT Xavier, a young man living with father Curtis and sister Sonya in working-class 1978 Chicago, enjoys skating at an area roller rink with his pals. When their favorite rink goes under one day, Xavier and friends find themselves forced to hang out at the "Sweetwater" rink in an affluent corner of town, ultimately deciding to train for and take part in a heated roller disco competition to win the respect of the rink's proprietor and other skaters.
