ABSTRACT Inspired in part by real-life events surrounding California's parent trigger law, Won't Back Down chronicles the trials and tribulations of two mothers -- one a car dealer and bartender, the other a teacher -- as they attempt to improve the quality of an area inner city school by defying the ways and means of its principal, government bureaucrats, and a corrupt teachers' union. Funded by conservative telecom billionaire Philip Anschutz and touted by charter-school advocate Michelle Rhee, the film was marked by significant controversy upon its release.
