ABSTRACT Elroy Fletcher, proprietor of a beleaguered video store in Passaic, New Jersey, places foster son Mike in charge of his business while out of town on a trip celebrating Fats Waller's hundredth birthday. Enter Mike's bizarre pal Jerry, "magnetized" after unsuccessfully attempting to sabotage a power station; when he visits the store to shoot the breeze with his friend, he inadvertently erases the contents of every tape in the shop's inventory, a calamity forcing our cash-strapped duo to resort to producing home-made versions of hit movies to tide customers over until Elroy's return. The pair's films soon develop a cult following, compounding an already-awkward situation as Mike and Jerry struggle to formulate their next move.
