Two close friends from Philadelphia, Birdy, an introvert obsessed with flight and all aspects of birds, and Al, athletic and popular, are drafted and sent to the war in Vietnam. Al receives physical injuries, but Birdy's psychological damage is far worse: he returns home unresponsive and near-catatonic. Birdy's doctor hopes that Al can bring him out, but is not optimistic.
