Viridiana (1961)

The young woman's resemblance to the man's long-deceased bride leads him to attempt drugging her in an effort at seduction; the ensuing rejection leads Don Jaime to suicide, and Viridiana inherits half the estate. She devotes her efforts to helping the poor, but the owner of the estate's other half, Jorge, has little empathy for those she helps. Won the Palme d'Or at Cannes. Spanish dictator Francisco Franco ordered all copies destroyed.
