A seemingly happily married man in London deserts his wife to become a painter in Paris, where he falls ill and is befriended by a fellow painter with a place to recuperate. But he steals that man's wife, discards her, and then runs off to the South Pacific island of Tahiti. Important aspects of the film were taken from the life of Paul Gauguin, but this is not at all a biography of Gauguin. Superb performance by George Sanders.
