REVIEWS

Review by frank the drawing demon (posted on 18-Sep-2005)

Considering the calamitous state of the portion of the South the film was shot in, Swamp Thing does provide a retrospective look back on the pre-Katrina appearance of the area.

In this instance, when you take a tried-and-true writer/director like Wes Craven, add seasoned actors like Adrienne Barbeau and veteran Louis Jourdan, you're virtually assured a hit.

I would leave it up to the viewer, particularly comic fans, as to whether they'd feel more well-versed as far as the book version, to familiarize, or to just see the film first, then do the comparison.

Special effects account for some of the chills and science-fictiony feel, along with the foreboding, yet tranquil bayou, replete with stifling heat. Of course, you don't find Adrienne seeking a cooling respite in the au naturel state everyday.

My guess is the alligators demurred from having her healthy hide for dinner, choosing to take the day off.

The plotline is standard sci-fi fare: noble scientific team researching, melagomaniac crackpot out to seize the formula, tragedy striking the hero, etc.
