Gangster Squad (9-Jan-2013)
Director: Ruben Fleischer Writer: Will Beall Based on a book: Gangster Squad by Paul Lieberman Keywords: Crime, Organized Crime A band of police detectives known as the Gangster Squad do battle against the forces of organized crime in late-1940s Los Angeles.
ABSTRACT In a tale very loosely based on the exploits of a late-1940s gang of Los Angeles Police Department detectives united against organized crime, Gangster Squad chronicles the trials and tribulations of failed boxer-turned-mobster Mickey Cohen's rise to the top of Los Angeles's criminal underworld and the Squad's associated attempts to prevent his empire from extending its reach across the United States. The side-story of Squad sergeant Jerry Wooters's courtship of Cohen's "etiquette teacher" and sometimes-lover, Grace Faraday, serves to add a cliched romantic element to a flick that, though action-packed and certain to fire up teenaged males, ultimately does nothing more than contribute to an underwhelming effort in a largely played-out neo-noir genre.
