ABSTRACT Marty, a spoiled zebra celebrating his tenth birthday at New York's Central Park Zoo, harbors dreams of breaking free of his life in captivity, naively imagining a host of "wide-open spaces" to roam around in elsewhere in the United States. Determined to realize his fantasy, Marty joins up with four similarly inclined and oblivious penguins, soon bringing a cast of better-informed anthropomorphic zoo animals along on a whimsical adventure spanning the globe.
