Director: Henry King Writers: Phoebe Ephron; Henry Ephron From a play: Liliom by Ferenc Molnár Music and Lyrics by: Richard Rodgers; Oscar Hammerstein II Producer: Henry Ephron Keywords: Musical, Romantic Drama Carnival barker Billy Bigelow falls in love with and marries young Julie Jordan; upon their marriage he loses his job (apparently only unmarried barkers are employable); lacking skills and means of support he takes to crime, though this proves fatal. Told in flashback as Billy receives permission for a brief return to Earth in hope of redemption and to right some of his wrongs. Though more successful as a stage play, still one of the better Rodgers & Hammerstein adaptations.
