ABSTRACT The latest in a vast series of silver-screen adaptations of the 1877 Leo Tolstoy novel, Anna Karenina tells the tale of how its titular character, the sister of imperial Russian prince "Stiva" Oblonsky and a well-liked socialite in St. Petersburg, has an affair with the immensely wealthy Count Vronsky. The affair, which tears apart Karenina's bond with husband Alexei and son Seryozha, is an epic one that ultimately ends in tragedy. Won an Academy Award for Best Costume Design; nominated for Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, and Best Set Decoration.
