Pearl, an aspiring professional novelist eager for an enticing story, grows enamored with Leland after learning that he is the son of renowned scribe Albert Fitzgerald; through interviews and details gleaned from a surreptitious journal kept in defiance of the detention center's rules, Pearl helps Leland piece together events leading to his fateful act of violence, doing so while coping with romantic indiscretions and failings in his own life.
