Bravo's "Fidel" is very well done from an artistic point of view and has great historic footage. A better title, however, would have been "We love Fidel." For those who don't know Cuban history, the carefully crafted script will not offend. Events are cleverly distorted or altogether ignored to elicit nothing less than adoration of the Great Lader, beloved by all. The elephant in the room that Ms. Bravo missed is the absence of the most fundamental human rights (association, expression, self-determination, intellectual/artistic, economic, judicial, etc.) that has been well documented by international human rights organizations and has thousands of first-hand witnesses in exile. The ignored human cost is enormous -thousands of executions and extrajudicial killings, the forced exile of opponents, a huge number of political prisoners, the exile of hundredes of thousands, the separation of families. Not to mention the economic devastation of the country. One would think that Ms. Bravo could have found at least one person who doesn't think the world of Fidel Castro...

Finally a film about Fidel Castro made by a film maker who actually knows about Cuba first hand and whose sensitivity and sincerity brings you into intimate conversation with the most influential and intriguing man of our times. Estela Bravo has lived in Cuba for the past several decades and has made a number of films about Cuba as well as other Latin American countries and Africa. Her’s is the most complete video biography of Fidel available. Unlike Stone's Comandante, which consists of Fidel answering a series of questions, and other films that I care not to name that are nothing more than sensationalism and lies, this film is like taking a walk at Fidel's side. The life of Fidel Castro is placed in the context of World and Cuban history while he himself opens up and invites your understanding.
