Medal awarded by the U.S. military to soldiers wounded in combat by the enemy. The medal itself is heart-shaped, with the profile of President George Washington in white on a purple background. Created in 1782, revived in 1932.
Recipients are eligible to join The Military Order of the Purple Heart, a veterans organization.
