Brainchild of Tina Brown (grown-up wunderkind responsible for rejuvenating Vanity Fair and The New Yorker), Talk was begun in 1999 and existed for two-and-one-half years, reaching a circulation of 670,000. One hundred employees were on staff. Tina blamed the demise of Talk on the economic effects of "9/11", though the actual cause is the magazine's lack of proper focus or voice. One anonymous wag was quoted in the Washington Post, "There was no reason for the magazine. There was not a memorable piece in the history of that magazine."
