"The Best of the Worst of the Worst of the Best"

Formed in 1996 and due to be terminated at the end of 2006, V/Vm is the project of James Kirby, a noise musician from Edgeley, Stockport, England. Much of the band's output gushes from the band's label V/Vm Test, which has self-released over a hundred discs from dozens of otherwise commercially untenable artists. Taken individually songs seem like laddish filips, but these are only trotters in the meat locker of the overall corpus, a horrible universe of detuned oboes and soughing bassoons, film negatives of mispressed pop music, equal parts found sound and machine music.

For many years the group's attacks on copyright were nearly ignored by Big Music, until the backlash from the band's 2003 Frankie Goes to Hollywood orgy (commemorating the 20-year anniversary of Relax) forced V/Vm into hiding in Belgium, where he rediscovered New Beat, the ultima thule of late-80s dance music. In late 2005 V/Vm re-emerged with a 84-song The Caretaker mp3 release -- barely a teaser for his swansong V/Vm 365 project, which provides free mp3s every day for all of 2006.

The unit 'vvm' is used for bioreactor culture. The first 'v' stands for volume of air (e.g. liter) ; the second 'v' stands for per unit of medium (e.g. liter); 'm' stands for per unit of time (e.g. minute). For example, 2 vvm (l/l/m) means in 1 minute time there is 2 liter of air passing through 1 liter of medium.
