Anti-Saloon League

ORGANIZATION

Founded 1893 in Oberlin Ohio, the Anti-Saloon League became nationwide around 1895. It was instrumental, alongside the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, in passing the 18th Amendment and thus the era of Prohibition. The organization lost much influence after Prohibition's repeal in 1933, and in 1950 changed name to the National Temperance League. In 1964 it changed name again to the American Council on Alcohol Problems.
