POLITICAL PARTY

The National Action Party, known by its Spanish initials PAN, is a right-wing political party in Mexico. It has been largely defined by its opposition role to the historically dominant Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI) over 7 decades.

PAN grew from a regional power to a national influence during the economic crisis of the 1970s/1980s, drawing many of the industrialist funders that formerly backed PRI as well as harvesting some of the national backlash against PRI's corruption and cronyism.

1989 saw the first PAN state governorship in Baja California. With 2000 came the first PAN president ever in the form of Vicente Fox.
