Canadian-American chemist Lewis Urry developed the alkaline battery while working at Eveready (now Energizer Holdings). Invented in 1959, Urry's battery exploited chemical reactions between manganese dioxide and powdered zinc, and had many times the useful life of then-standard zinc-carbon batteries. It was eventually branded Energizer, marketed in television commercials by the pink "Energizer bunny", and proved crucial to the later development of camcorders, cell phones, laptop computers, and other battery-dependent devices. Urry held 51 patents, including several in the 1980s related to the development of rechargeable lithium batteries.
