Lord Stanley of Preston and the 16th Earl of Derby, Sir Frederick Arthur Stanley was born to one of England's wealthiest families, and traced his lineage to William the Conqueror. After seven years in the Grenadier Guards, he began a long political career that included more than twenty years in Parliament, and in 1888 he was appointed by Queen Victoria as Governor General of then-colonial Canada. A shy man and ill at ease at state dinners and grand state functions, he was an able administrator who spoke fluent French and sought to stay neutral in Canadian political matters.
During his five years in Canada, Lord Stanley attended occasional hockey games and found the sport intriguing. His sons, however, were avid players and enthusiasts, and Stanley's daughter Isabel formed a ladies' team. His children lobbied Stanley to supply the sport with a championship trophy, and in 1892 he relented, writing in a letter to local sportsmen:
"I have for some time been thinking that it would be a good thing if there were a challenge cup which should be held from year to year by the champion hockey team in the Dominion of Canada. There does not appear to be any such outward sign of a championship at present, and considering the general interest which matches now elicit, and the importance of having the game played fairly and under rules generally recognized, I am willing to give a cup which shall be held from year to year by the winning team."
Stanley himself never saw his Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup awarded, as he returned to England before the next hockey season began. Re-named in his honor after his death, the Stanley Cup is now presented annually to the champions of the National Hockey League. He is also the namesake of Stanley Park in Vancouver, British Columbia. His father, George Geoffrey Smith-Stanley, was thrice Prime Minister of England (for ten months in 1852, then from 1858-59, and from 1866-68), and his brother, Edward Henry Stanley, declined an offer to become King of Greece.Father: Edward George Geoffrey Stanley (Prime Minister of England, b. 29-Mar-1799, d. 23-Oct-1869) Mother: Emma Caroline Bootle-Wilbraham Smith-Stanley (m. 21-Mar-1825, d. 26-Apr-1876) Brother: Edward Henry Stanley (15th Earl of Derby, b. 21-Jul-1826, d. 21-Apr-1893) Wife: Lady Constance Villiers (b. 1840, m. 31-May-1864, d. 17-Apr-1922, eight sons, two daughters) Daughter: Katherine Mary Stanley (d. infancy 21-Oct-1871) Son: Sir Edward George Villiers Stanley (17th Earl of Derby, b. 4-Apr-1865, d. 4-Feb-1948) Son: Sir Victor Albert Stanley (Admiral of the Fleet, b. 17-Jan-1867, d. 9-Jun-1934) Son: Sir Arthur Stanley (diplomat, b. 18-Nov-1869, d. 4-Nov-1947) Son: Geoffrey Stanley b. 18-Nov-1869, d. 16-Mar-1871) Son: Ferdinand Charles Stanley (Grenadier Guard, b. 28-Jan-1871, d. 17-Mar-1935) Son: Sir George Frederick Stanley (Viceroy of India, b. 14-Oct-1872, d. 1-Jul-1938) Son: Algernon Francis Stanley (military officer, b. 8-Jan-1874, d. 10-Feb-1962) Daughter: Lady Isobel Constance Mary Stanley Gathorne-Hardy (b. 2-Sep-1875, d. 30-Dec-1963) Son: Frederick William Stanley (military officer, b. 27-May-1878, d. 9-Aug-1942)
