Gender: Female Religion: Christian Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Religion Nationality: United States Executive summary: Mother Ann, Founder of the Shakers Having experienced four miscarriages and four children who died in infancy, it is understandable that Ann Lee developed an opposition to sexual intercourse. She received a revelatory vision in 1770 affirming this, also in which she apparently became the feminine incarnation of Jesus Christ. A second vision in 1774 sent her and eight followers, including her husband, to America. Around her a "Shaker" community developed, opposed to marriage and intercourse, promoting frugality. Such a community being not self-sustaining, it always needed new recruits. Upon her death, followers formalized themselves as the United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Appearing. Small remnants of the movement survive to this day, known for their handmade furniture. Husband: Abraham Standley (m. circa 1762, separated 1776, four children)
Miscarriage (four, in England) Founded Religion Subversion 1780 (imprisoned 5 months)
