Alan Dershowitz AKA Alan Morton Dershowitz Born: 1-Sep-1938 Birthplace: Brooklyn, NY
Gender: Male Religion: Jewish Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Attorney Party Affiliation: Democratic Nationality: United States Executive summary: Lawyer, represented Klaus von Bulow Alan Deshowitz is a law professor at Harvard and an outspoken civil rights advocate. As an attorney, he has said he is "not a hired gun," and only accepts cases when he feels an important "moral or constitutional issue" is at stake — his clients have included evangelist-swindler Jim Bakker, victim-revolutionary Patty Hearst, boxer and rapist Mike Tyson, and accused wife-killer Claus von Bulow (a story told in the movie Reversal of Fortune), among many other clients. In the aftermath of 9/11, Dershowitz publicly called for the US to use torture in interrogations, which damaged his previous status as an almost-icon defender of constitutional rights.
Norman Finkelstein, Alexander Cockburn and Prof. Yehoshua Porath rightly accuse Dershowitz's writing in The Case for Israel of plagiarism. Passages of similarity are pointed out between this work and Joan Peters' 1984 book, From Time Immemorial: The Origins of the Arab-Jewish Conflict over Palestine. Dershowitz repeatedly cites identical sources, sources he quite possibly did not actually consult in the writing of his work. Peters' work itself, which he definitely consulted extensively, is inadequately cited.
