With a small inheritance he opened a hardware store in Fayetteville, North Carolina, selling and installing such needed items as nails and door hinges. In 1842, he bought an abandoned building in New Britain, Connecticut, and opened Stanley's Bolt Manufactory, using a one-cylinder, high-pressure steam engine to make bolts and such hardwares as doorknobs and drawer handles. Ten years later the company was incorporated as the Stanley Works.
Prior to opening the bolt factory, he was co-owner of a small hardware shop that, long after Stanley sold his interest, evolved into the American Hardware Corporation, a major retailer through the 1950s. His cousin Henry Stanley founded the Stanley Rule & Level Company in 1857, a toolmaking business, and served concurrently as President of both companies after the Civil War. Frederick Stanley withdrew from the business, entered local political life, and was elected mayor of New Britain. Stanley Rule was merged into Stanley Works in 1920.
