Executive summary: Drummer for Mr. Mister and King Crimson Frequently relocated as a result the itinerant lifestyle of his construction worker father, Pat Mastelotto found refuge from his feelings of dislocation by immersing himself in drumming at the age of 10. Entirely self-taught, he performed in a popular local band throughout his high school years (at this time he was living in Oroville), and after graduation he worked in a series of nearly-successful ensembles, as well as establishing himself as a session musician. The drummer's break into the big time arrived in 1982 when songwriters Richard Page and Steve George enlisted his services for their new band Mr. Mister; releasing three albums (I Wear The Face, 1984; Welcome To The Real World, 1985; and Go On..., 1987) across their 8 years of existence, Mr. Mister carved a considerable niche for themselves in the pop music world with high-charting singles such as Broken Wings and Kyrie. The fortunes of the band began to disintegrate after the resignation of guitarist Steve Farris in 1998, however, and although a fourth album was completed, the Misters were dropped from their label (MCA) before it was released.
During the periods of inactivity that took place in the final two years of Mr. Mister's existence, Mastelotto kept himself busy with sessions, contributing to albums by XTC and Cock Robin -- even becoming a member of both groups for short periods of time. After the final dissolution of the Misters, his session work broadened to include recordings by artists such as Robyn Hitchcock, Michael Penn and The Sugarcubes. The second turn of his career fortunes arrived in 1993 when he answered an audtion for the short-lived Sylvian and Fripp collaborative project, replacing drummer Jerry Marotta for the tour in support of their album The First Day. The following year, news of the reformation of King Crimson as a "double trio" came to his attention; despite being told that founding Crimson member Michael Giles would most likely get the job, Mastelotto scraped his frequent flyer miles together for a plane ticket to attend the auditions in England. The long-shot paid off, and for the next few years he traded odd time signatures with fellow Crimson drummer Bill Bruford. To fill in the gaps between the availability of the entire group for recording and touring, several splinter configurations were created as a form of "research and development": of these, Mastelotto participated in ProjeKct Three, ProjeKct X (both studio based) and ProjeKct Four (which toured in 1998).
In 1997 Bruford decided to turn his attention full time to his jazz combo Earthworks, and Pat Mastelotto found himself the sole drummer for King Crimson. Using a innovative combination of acoustic and electric drums augmented by sampling and programming, Mastelotto helped to usher in an entirely new era for the long-enduring band, creating a style that avoided simply rehashing the earlier line-ups in its history. Concurrent with his participation in Crimson, the drummer has remained active with a relentless parade of side projects, amongst which are BPM&M (an electronica duo with producer Bill Munyon), his odd trio MasticA, occasional work with The California Guitar Trio, and TU, a duo with Crimson rhythm buddy Trey Gunn.
