Scripps' brother James founded the Detroit Advertiser and Tribune a successful penny newspaper. Edward learned the business and, beginning with his 1878 purchase of the Cleveland Penny Press, began to duplicate the format in several cities, eventually owning 34 newspapers in 15 states. With his brother George Scripps and Milton A. McRae, Scripps founded the Scripps-McRae League of Newspapers in 1894. In 1907, the League was joined with two other newspaper consortiums United Press, a precursor of United Press International, in order to compete with the Associated Press. Scripps began acquiring land near San Diego in 1890, eventually holding some 2000 acres by the time he retired to his ranch there at Miramar. The brunt of his estate was held in trust by his sister, Ellen Browning Scripps, after his death. Father: James Mogg Scripps Mother: Julia A.
