Alexander Lukashenko AKA Alexander Grigoryevich Lukashenko Born: 30-Aug-1954 Birthplace: Kopys, Vitsebsk, Belarus
Gender: Male Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Head of State Nationality: Belarus Executive summary: President of Belarus Military service: Soviet Army (1975-77, 1980-82) Originally elected on an anti-corruption and anti-inflation platform in 1994, in Belarus's first democratic presidential elections, in a field of six candidates -- winning 80% of the popular vote in the runoff. Unfortunately the economy of Belarus is totally dependent on that of Russia, with intractable issues that necessitate distortions making reform virtually impossible. Belarus cannot even afford the energy required to keep the nation powered. Lukashenko has thus taken a vitriolic, anti-Western stance, seizing power by the use of rigged elections and provoking most of the Western ambassadors (and even Russia, for a time) to withdraw from the country in a 1998 incident. Belarus also exports large amounts of weapons to problem nations including Iran, Iraq, Sudan, etc. A 2004 "referendum" ended limits on presidential terms. Lukashenko's actions grow quirkier over time. An unusual new law mandates that 75% of broadcast media must consist of Belarusian artists over foreigners, and another that all businesses must maintain "books of suggestions and complaints". Wife: Galina Rodionovna Lukashenko (two sons)
University: Mogilev Teaching Institute (1975) University: Belarusian Agricultural Academy (1985)
President of Belarus 20-Jul-1994 to present Audience with the Pope Apr-2009
