Astrophysicist Charles Greeley Abbot worked under Samuel P. Langley at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, and eventually took charge of both the observatory and the museum. He studied the effect of solar activity on terrestrial weather patterns (work which formed the basis for long-range weather predictions) and he established the now-recognized value of the solar constant (the average amount of solar radiation that reaches the earth's upper atmosphere). As a visual aide for his lectures, he designed some of the earliest solar-powered heaters and cookers, and he is the namesake of the Abbot Award, presented annually by the American Solar Energy Society. He was a great-grand-nephew of Nathan Hale.
