Executive summary: Governor of California

Jerry Brown was a two-term Governor of California in the 1970s and early 1980s, succeeding Ronald Reagan, and a one-time Presidential hopeful, defeating Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton in six state primaries in 1992. After leaving Sacramento, Brown organized a national activist group called We the People, and hosted a radio program of the same name. He was elected Mayor of Oakland in 1997, became the state's Attorney General a decade later, and was elected Governor of California again in 2010, defeating billionaire businesswoman Meg Whitman to succeed retiring Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

He is the son of former California Governor Pat Brown. He earned a college degree in the Classic Literature, attended Yale Law School, and practiced as an attorney with the high-power firm of Tuttle & Taylor. He also attended a Jesuit seminary, worked in India with Mother Teresa, studied Zen Buddhism in Japan, and practiced yoga. His political positions are similarly varied: In his first stint as California Governor, he supported the state's three strikes initiative, advanced alternative energy programs, worked to reduce business taxes, cut state budgets and payroll, more than doubled state funding for higher education, enacted mandatory sentences for violent crimes, and proposed a state-sponsored space exploration program.

In a 1976 article in the Chicago Daily News, columnist Mike Royko wrote that Brown was attracting "the moonbeam vote" in California, and Brown soon came to be derided nationally as "Governor Moonbeam". Royko himself apparently found the term tedious, and wrote while Brown was running for President in 1991, "Enough of this 'Moonbeam' stuff. I declare it null, void and deceased".
