Fred Wardell worked alongside his father as an auctioneer for more than twenty years before quitting in 1902 to sell vacuum cleaners. Seven years later he went into business for himself under the name Eureka Vacuum Cleaner Company, but still only selling, not making the machines. In 1913, with four business partners, he purchased a small factory and began making Eureka brand vacuum cleaners. By 1927 Eureka had sold more than two-million vacuum cleaners, and was the second best selling brand of vacuum in America. Wardell died in 1952, and the company is now a unit of Electrolux.
