Executive summary: US Senator from Nevada, 1873-1903 Born in Wales, Jones arrived with his parents in northern Ohio as an infant. After attending Cleveland public schools, Jones settled in Tuolumne and Trinity Counties, California in 1850. In 1867 he was an unsuccessful candidate for Lieutenant Governor of California. He resettled in Nevada in 1868, becoming a millionaire from a Comstock Lode mine, the Crown Point. Notably a fire devastated the mine in 1869, and Jones personally rescued dozens of his trapped workers. Jones was elected to US Senate in 1873, succeeding James Nye. A bill introduced by him, essentially a sop for silver miners, resulted in the silver 20 cent piece. This coin was a failure and the mint discontinued it two years later.
