Celebrated landscape architect and horticulturalist, who obtained the name of Capability Brown, it is said from his frequent use of that word in references to the sites submitted for his work. He carried ornamental gardening to high perfection. Brown was born at Kirkharle in Northumberland, in 1716. At an early period of his life he came to London, and was patronized by Lord Viscount Cobham, the celebrated friend and patron of Alexander Pope. It is generally understood that scooping out the beautiful Grecian Valley opposite the Temple of Concord at Stowe was among the first of his undertakings. But Richmond, Blenheim, Croome, Luton, Trentham, Redgrave, Wimbledon, Nuneham, etc. will for all ages stand memorials of his superior taste and abilities. He possessed a cultivated mind, and his society was courted by men of the highest distinction and genius. Brown was High Sheriff for Huntingdonshire in 1770, and died suddenly in 1783 on the streets of London, on return from a visit to the Earl of Coventry.
