For several years Perdue only sold the eggs, but in 1925 he built a hatchery and began selling the chickens, not for meat but as egg producers for other farmers. In the early 1930s Perdue bought additional hatcheries, and in the 1940s the firm switched its emphasis to broiler chickens, after an outbreak of leukosis (a poultry disease) killed virtually all of its leghorns. The company began contracting with chicken farmers in the mid-1930s, entered the chicken feed business in the early 1950s, and went into poultry processing in 1967. Arthur Perdue was active in management of the business until his death in 1977. More of a manufacturer than a farm, Perdue Farms presently processes about 50,000,000 chickens and 4,000,000 turkeys every week.
