Julianna MarguliesAKA Julianna Luisa Margulies

Birthplace: Spring Valley, NY

Gender: Female
Race or Ethnicity: White

Occupation: Actor

Nationality: United States
Executive summary: Alicia Florrick on The Good Wife

Julianna Margulies was raised in France, England, and New Hampshire. Her father was an advertising copywriter, credited with creating the "Plop plop fizz fizz" ad campaign for Alka-Seltzer in 1953. Her mother was a dancer with the American Ballet Theater, who now lives in Massachusetts and teaches eurythmy (rhythmical body movements accompanied by recitation of poetry or prose).

Margulies performed in several college plays, then spent years working as a waitress and bartender while being rejected at auditions. Most Americans first saw her as a smiling worker in a late-1980s McDonald's TV commercial. In her first film, 1991's Out for Justice with Steven Seagal, she had a small part as a hooker with a heart of gold, but after that she was unable to find further film work, and instead appeared in local and regional theater. She later landed a recurring role as Ned Beatty's unlikely romantic interest on Homicide -- she is 29 years younger than Beatty.

From 1994-2000, Margulies played Carol Hathaway, a nurse in NBC's long-running ER. Her character was originally scripted to suicide from a drug overdose in the first episode, but the producers liked Margulies and instead made her a regular. Remarkably, she is the only member of the regular cast to win an Emmy on the show, taking home the Best Supporting Actress statuette in 1995. During her years in the emergency room, Nurse Hathaway romanced the unstable paramedic Shep (played by Margulies's real-life lover Ron Eldard), opened a free health clinic, had a lengthy but angsty affair with Dr Doug Ross (George Clooney), lived through a traumatic robbery, took an intense concern in pregnant addict Martha Plimpton's life, watched over a bucketful of expensive worms, and gave birth to the Clooney character's twins -- one born by Cesarean section. In 2000, Margulies turned down a reported $27-million offer and left the show to become a movie star, which has not yet happened. Nurse Hathaway was scripted as flying off to Seattle to be with Doug.

Since leaving ER, she has achieved an even higher level of stardom as Alicia Florrick, the clever lawyer at the center of The Good Wife. She has also been featured in TV's feminist retelling of King Arthur's legend The Mists of Avalon with Anjelica Huston, and played the wife of Nazi collaborator Liev Schreiber on Hitler: The Rise of Evil. On the big screen, she played Kyra Sedgwick's lesbian lover in What's Cooking?, an Irish barmaid in Evelyn with Pierce Brosnan, and she was the flight attendant who improvised a weapon for Samuel L. Jackson to battle all those Snakes on A Plane.
