Jeans proposed that matter is created continuously everywhere in the universe. He confirmed Lord Rayleigh's work on the distribution of energy, and provided the first proof of James Clerk Maxwell's theory regarding molecular velocities. He also studied electricity, magnetism, radiation, and thermodynamics, and achieved his greatest fame as the author of several books explaining and popularizing science for a non-expert audience.
His first wife, Charlotte Tiffany Mitchell, was a niece of famed jeweler Louis Comfort Tiffany, and her sister (Jeans' sister-in-law) was married to American Senator Hiram Bingham. Jeans' second wife, Susi Jeans, was a student of Charles-Marie Widor who became a well-regarded concert organist.
