Executive summary: Tell 'Em Why U Madd Brooklyn-born Deric "D-Dot" Angelettie first commited his "Madd Rapper" persona to record in 1997 for Notorious B.I.G.'s Life After Death release -- an album on which he also acted as producer, helming it's most commercially successful track Hypnotize. Angelettie had previously worked as half of the rap duo 2 Kings in a Cipher, whose sole hit For The Brothers Who Ain't Here was released by the ill-fated BAHIA Entertainment label. From there he took on an internship at Bad Boy Records, quickly advancing to Merchandising Director and then to booking agent and road managing for some of the label's leading acts. He was later chosen by label founder Sean "Puff Daddy" Combs to become Bad Boy's A&R Director, and ultimately given the position of Staff Producer; in this role he produced charting tracks for Puff Daddy, Mase, Faith Evans, LL Cool J, Jay-Z, and numerous others.
Angelettie's debut release as The Madd Rapper, Tell 'Em Why U Madd, surfaced in 1999, preceded by the popular single D-Dot vs. the Madd Rapper. The record featured production by not only D-Dot himself, but also other members of his Crazy Cat production team -- amongst whom are Kanye West, Charlemagne, and Garrett "Blake" Smith. 2 Kings in a Cipher Vocalist (1991)
