Executive summary: Reissner shear-deformation plate theory

Mathematician and engineer Eric Reissner developed the Reissner shear-deformation plate theory, which explains mathematically how flat objects respond to stress or when a force is applied to them. This led to the modeling of forces on surfaces such as structural floors and the metal skins of airplane wings, and allowed significant advances in civil and aeronautical engineering. He also conducted important research into the principals of elasticity and the behavior of elastic beams, plates and shells. His father, Hans Jacob Reissner, was a noted aeronautical engineer.
