Born Rhys Evans, he changed his last name to the Welsh spelling, Ifans, "just to be difficult". He began performing in youth theater at 13. But he is best known in the U.K. as a bong-breather and glue-sniffer in Twin Town (1997), costarring his brother, Llyr Evans.

Stateside, Ifans was first recognized playing Hugh Grant's unkempt and scurrilous roommate in Notting Hill. He has also played an English twerp in The Shipping News, a cross-dressing weapons dealer in Formula 51, an ape man in Human Nature, and a son of Satan in Little Nicky.
