Governor of Florida in 1870, the election was stolen from him, and complex legal maneuvering prevented him from obtaining a ruling by the Florida Supreme Court until 1872, by which time it was a moot point. He ran for Governor that year, but was defeated by Ossian B. Hart. His second attempt, in 1880, was successful. During his administration, the state emerged into solvency by a monumental sale of four million acres of Everglades land to Hamilton Disston, for the price of $1M. It made Disston the largest landowner in the United States. 1885 saw Bloxham's appointment as US Ambassador to Bolivia, but he failed to report to his post.
